How to "Double" the Life Of
Your Floor with 5% More!

Here’s some good advice:

In regards to flooring, we see certain patterns of wear and tear coming back. This usually happens after 5 to 15 years of installation depending on how much wear happens on the floor.

Often people are caught changing or sanding ”all” their floors because of some “hot spot” areas that are more worn out than others.

This can be avoided with a minimal amount of extra backup flooring, generally 5%.

Here’s how:

Hot spots are usually in three areas.

1. Patio doorways:
   Especially in rental units, animals going out for their needs, or traffic through the patio doorway causes the floors to lose their shape and shrink or swell in the event of a floating floor.
   
   
2. Leaving the bathroom with shower or bath on:
   Wet feet, over time (usually 10-15 years), will have the same effect as what was explained in the patio section above.
   
   
3. Between The Kitchen and The Island:
   If you have an island in the kitchen, over time, all the foot traffic that is experiences as well as the water leaking or dripping off your sink can have the same warping effect as the two previously mentioned areas.

Solution:
Buy an additional 5% (on top of your minimum loss) of flooring that you can keep in storage. Usually 1-2 boxes in storage at a minimum can replace the damaged floors in the three areas previously mentioned.

Storing wood is simple. Just keep your extra floors boxed somewhere safely on dry ground in an environment with 30-60% humidity.

It is possible to change only a few planks of damaged flooring with the backups you have. This allows you to save by not having to change your entire floor.

Keep in mind that not all floors wear out within the same timeframe. Floating floors are very susceptible to the problems mentioned above in the medium term. Engineered woods and hardwood floors are much more durable and show wear-and-tear between 12-20 years. Vinyl floors are not as susceptible to this problem.
