Tips for Installing Hardwood Floors

You’d be surprised how easy and simple it can be to install hardwood flooring in your bedroom, living room, or dining room. However, it takes a lot of dedication and attention to achieve optimal results. Are you ready to take to flooring?

The weekend is here and you don’t know what to do? How about staying home today to fix all those flaws you’ve always wanted to fix? Let’s start with hardwood flooring, which generally deteriorates over the years due to factors such as humidity in certain areas or natural wear and tear on the wood.

Steps in installing hardwood flooring

After measuring the width and length of the room (remember to multiply them to get the number of square metres), check the sub-floor and make sure there is no squeaking. Don’t forget to buy 5-10% more boards for any mistakes or poor cuts that may occur. Keep in mind that wall installations are the most complicated job, so start by drawing a chalk line 3/8″ from the base plate to get an idea of how many boards are needed to cover that area.

First, draw a line to help you guide you through where you would need to install the planks. Then, to install the first row of planks in the line you have just drawn, drill small holes in the plank and use a nail gun to install each plank, respecting the length that limits its division. When striking with the mallet or using the pneumatic nail gun, you must do so firmly, directing your hand straight ahead to direct the drilling. A little carelessness can ruin everything and that’s not what you want.

Going back to the baseboards, place a piece at each end, distributing the entire extension evenly over the wall. You can use leftover wood to save material. You never know when you might need the same model of board.
Before drilling your boards, be sure to put two nails in each board. For narrow spaces to install the last plank in a line, remember to leave a 3/8 cm space for expansion and contraction of the space. Finally, fill the holes with putty.
